Barrett Jones says he's healthiest he's been since NFL arrival
By Nick Wagoner

http://espn.go.com/blog/st-louis-ra...ays-hes-healthiest-hes-been-since-nfl-arrival

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- For the first time since his arrival in the NFL in 2013, St. Louis Rams offensive lineman Barrett Jones is fully healthy.

Whether it was recovering from a foot injury as a rookie or back surgery last year, Jones has never been able to offer much to the Rams because he's spent more time in the training room than on the practice field. All of those ailments have been enough to limit Jones to 10 games and just 22 offensive snaps in two seasons after a decorated college career.

What's worse, they've kept Jones from having full offseasons to work out and add the muscle the Rams believe he needs to hold up on the line. So Jones had a simple goal this offseason.

"I definitely wanted to be 100 percent," Jones said. "When I had back surgery last year, I wasn’t able to work out for a long time, so I wanted to put a lot more muscle on. I feel really good about where my body is make up wise and getting to work out a whole offseason healthy and that was one of my goals, to pack on more muscle and lean up a little bit. I think I’ve leaned up a little bit."

Jones does look like he's added some lean muscle, though he said he doesn't have any numbers on how much weight he's lost or what his body fat percentage is now.

"I don’t know," Jones said. "I’m not a science guy. Us big guys, we’re still not anxious for body fat tests. When we’re in good shape, it’s more like 20 (percent) so it’s not the same."

This offseason also hasn't been the same for Jones, but in a good way. The former two-time All American, three-time national champion and Outland Trophy winner said he has no lingering issues from any of his previous injuries and has been able to consistently stay in the weight room.

The timing of that health couldn't be better for Jones, who is also in position to win a starting job for the first time since he arrived. The Rams released center Scott Wells in March, and Jones is one of three players competing to win that job. Rams coach Jeff Fisher has made it clear that the mental aspect of the offense will be a primary factor in determining a winner, which is good news for Jones, who is considered one of the most intelligent linemen on the roster.

But staying mentally sharp has never been much of a concern for Jones. In that regard, he's ready. It all comes down to whether he's strong enough to hold up against some of the brute-force defensive linemen he'll see, especially in the rugged NFC West division.

Although it's just his third season, Jones is well aware that this is his best chance to prove he belongs.

"It's definitely a big year," Jones said. "It's a performance-based league obviously, and this is a year I have got to perform well. I know that and I'm here working hard. At the same time, I try not to worry too much about the big picture. I think you can kind of get consumed with that thinking about 'Oh no, doing the numbers, how many guys are going to make the team?' I don't think that’s really healthy. I think you just need to come in and work really hard every day and just kind of focus on that. Hopefully at the end of the day, the rest will take care of itself."

I don't know what to think. I know injuries have slowed down his development. But IIRC, he was a healthy scratch a few times too. So what was it? Injuries or just not as good as the others? Sure, he works hard. But if I had a dollar for every time someone said that about marginal players, well, I could afford to buy season tickets to a game 2000 miles away.

I guess this is the time of year to write positive articles on everyone. Better than saying someone's a flop and don't get your hopes up.

I think you can be healthy enough to be on the roster and still not be 100%.

And more to the author's point, he really has needed to be healthy for a good chunk of time to be able to stay in the weight room and bulk up.

Hoping for the best - from all 3 of our center candidates. Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to have some real depth out there this year.

So far that 4th round investment in a player that was already injured, sure hasn't panned out. He is looking more like the 6th rounder, that you usually use on a guy with a serious injury.

So Jones has some ground to make up if he is going to prove his worth.

I have never been a believer. He was weak back in college and reports said that he would need to get stronger to play in the NFL. I hope he can change my mind about his abilities.

I think Barnes wins the job, but I hope Rhainey comes from behind and really impresses and shows the coaches potential to become a great Center for years to come.

Why? I think Barnes has his limitations that will keep him from ever being great...Jones has his health/strength issues that will keep him from being a great Center and Rhainey, he is young, healthy and a bit of an unknown so if there is one player that still offers hope it would be him.

Is Rhaney the guy who spent the year on IR, or am I thinking of another OL?

Most of you all know that I have been a Barrett Jones fan since his Bama Championship teams, but boy has he had a bad two yrs of luck.

With Snead drafting of 4 OL'ers plus the signing of 2 UDFA's (one being a center) & the resigning of the top reserve center UFA Tim Barnes is a very strong signal to Barrett that this team is getting in a strong position where they can move on without him if he can not find a spot where he can help this team make a big step forward.

This off season was Barrett's last chance to get fully healthy & show measurable positive steps in getting his body up to full NFL playing level in conditioning & strength. Now's the time is getting real close where it time to produce. My dad had another phase that he used on me in my much younger life ..." Time to xxxx or get off the pot".

I have posted that I believe Barrett will do just that. I do not expect him to start on the OL this season however I do see that he can secure a spot on this master roster in the capacity in last yrs Mike Person role. Barrett should be able to win the top reserves role for the center, OLG & OLT post. This would be the 6th game day dressed Boudreau OL position.

I think he wins the spot.

Between his smarts and the work he can put in with Foles, I expect them to really develop a synergy. Plus, EVEN in college when he relied more on technique than strength, Barrett Jones played best against the bigger NTs rather than the speed guys, so it's not like he couldn't anchor even then.

Jones has always had the talent to be EXACTLY what we need. He just needed some health and additional functional strength. It's taken a bit of time, but now he's gotten both. Had we gotten him in the 2nd which is where his talent probably deserved, things would be a lot more tense, but we got him in the 4th which was appropriate and he's had this time to develop.

Now, we're going to see if this super accomplished player was worth developing.

I think he is.

Barrett Jones might be the most decorated player in the history of Alabama football. In 2012, he became the third Alabama player to become a two-time consensus All-American. In 2011, he won the Outland Trophy as the nation's best interior lineman. In 2012, he won the Rimington Trophy as the nation's best center. In 2012, he also won the William C. Campbell Trophy, an award sometimes called the "Academic Heisman."

While Jones piled up individual honors, he helped Alabama pile up victories. Jones played right guard for the Crimson Tide's 2009 BCS national championshp team, left offensive tackle for the 2011 title team and center for the 2012 title team.

Then Jones went to the NFL as a fourth-round draft choice of the St. Louis Rams, and he hasn't been able to duplicate his collegiate success as a pro. One reason? He hasn't had a chance to because of injuries. But that has changed this year.

"I feel as good as I've felt in a long time," Barrett told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I'll tell you, it's tough going up against our D-line when you're not 100 percent. But I've been able to work out all through the offseason, able to add some muscle and lean up a little bit. I don't know the exact numbers — big guys, we get a little anxious about those body-fat tests — but I feel great, and I'm really looking forward to competing at training camp."

In 2013, Jones had foot surgery because of an injury suffered at Alabama and played in only three games for the Rams. During training camp last year, Jones had back surgery, and he didn't return to the field until October. In two seasons, Jones has been on the field for 23 offensive snaps and 44 special-teams plays for the Rams.

This season, Jones has an opportunity to be St. Louis' starting center. The Rams released starter Scott Wells after his injury-marred 2014 season and have Jones, Tim Barnes and Demetrius Rhaney competing for the spot. Barnes has been a backup for three seasons for the Rams. St. Louis drafted Rhaney in the seventh round last year, but he spent the whole season on injured reserve.

"I think it's pretty open right now, from everything I hear," Jones told reporters about the Rams' center competition. "And we're all working hard. We have three good candidates, from what I see. ... We've just been rotating ones, twos and threes all of us all across the board -- different days working with different groups. You've got to make the most of your opportunities for sure. That's one of the interesting things about the NFL. Two of your good buddies on the team, you're obviously competing for spots and jobs. It's just what you've got to do. You've got to go out there and work hard and compete."

The Rams are the only NFL team that does not hold a minicamp in the summer. St. Louis wraps up its offseason program with its final four OTAs this week.

"We're not going to make a decision real early," St. Louis coach Jeff Fisher told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch of the center competition. "We'll let them all play. We're rotating them. They're all getting opportunities to work with (quarterback Nick Foles) so he's familiar, not only with the exchanges, but also the communication. We'll make that decision when somebody shows us he's earned the job."

After injuries limited his chances in his first two seasons, Jones knows 2015 could be a make-or-break year for him.

"It's definitely a big year," Jones told espn.com. "It's a performance-based league, obviously, and this is a year I have got to perform well. I know that, and I'm here working hard. At the same time, I try not to worry too much about the big picture. I think you can kind of get consumed with that thinking about, 'Oh no, doing the numbers, how many guys are going to make the team?' I don't think that's really healthy. I think you just need to come in and work really hard every day and just kind of focus on that. Hopefully, at the end of the day, the rest will take care of itself."

Really don't like most of the negative BS posted here about this guy, it does not fit with the attitude being preached here.

The Rams knew he had a major injury to a foot that was going to keep him out the first year, that is the only reason he fell to the fourth round.

Last year was a freak injury to his back again an injury that for a lineman mean he is essentially a lost cause for the year.

I'm excited to see what he can bring this year and I believe the Rams knew he would be ready to produce this year. This makes sense in both keeping Wells last year and letting him go this year and making our Oline woes not as desperate as they seemed to the outside world.

C'mon Rams Fans he is part of our team let's see some more positive posts rooting these guys on and a little more understanding and knowledgeable input rooting for our guys.

I loved the Jones pick in the 4th. What was not to like? The All American boy (literally) that you wished your daughter could marry. Smart, no off field issues, incredible resume. Sure seemed like a steal because of the lisfranc injury.

But now we're entering his 3rd year. He needs to earn his keep. Sorry to be so blunt, but it's a business. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one.

Nothing would make me happier than to see Jones thrive as our starter this year. Maybe starter isn't in the cards, but he could perhaps be a helluva swing OL player for us.

But ultimately, best players play and next best players stay. If Jones is not among them, life will go on for the Rams.

Just the way it is.

I have some other thoughts here about Barrett & the center position battles.....

One thing we all knew about our previous 3 yr starting center Scott Wells was he was an excellent person in the community & he & his wife have some very big sizable hearts in building the family they desire.......just great stuff outside the game day playing field.

We all knew that Wells was a professional leader & very smart & was brought here after some pro bowl type yrs with a winning team. Barrett if you dig very deep is a younger version of Wells in many ways. Both Barrett & Tim Barnes never miss the opportunity to mentioned their appreciations & thanks for the yrs of Scott Wells tutoring from the OC post.

Now that Wells after 3 very bad luck yrs has moved on Boudreau has two very smart young centers to fill the void in Tim & Barrett. Boudreau is lucky here now due to these two.

If Barrett losses out to Tim on the starting center post then Barrett can offer up Boudreau some excellent options filling other needs that Tim just can not do. Boudreau has a real issue @ reserve OLT post. Barrett just happens to have excelled & received many accommodations from playing OLT in college. Tim can not help Boudreau in this problem. Barrett also started 26 games for Bama & started & played OG for the BSC National Champions & SEC champions.

Tim Barnes is primarily a center who has played both OG posts for the Rams in pre season the last 3 yrs but never in a regular season game.

I think if Tim is awarded the starting post which i have predicted, Barrett will prove to be an very excellent back to Tim but also reserves for the starting OLG Saffold & OLT Robinson. Can you name be another Boudreau OL'er who could do this for him all in one game day dressed package?

If Barrett was awarded the starting post @ center then Boudreau must set out & find a versatile Ram OL'er who can play OT/OG & OC this will now put Demetrius & Tim in a very bad position due to the lesser abilities to play other posts. Tim Barnes who is much more experienced, bigger & stronger than the small Demetrius Rhaney. Rhaney secure position would become very precarious.

On the other hand the much more versatile OT/OG Andrew Donnal will be bolstered along with UDFA OLT Darrell Williams.

"Barrett Jones says he's healthiest he's been since NFL arrival"

Well now, it's not like that's saying very much since he's been sidelined with one injury or another for what....95% of his career.

I've been waiting for this guy to get healthy for a LONG time. Im going all in with the kol Aid. If he can finally stay healthy this offensive line is going to kill it. And the Rams are going to win a lot of games.
