The Rams have also scheduled a visit with defensive end Andre Carter, a former first-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2001. Carter spent five seasons with the 49ers before five years in Washington. He spent the 2011 season with New England, but suffered a torn quadriceps on Dec. 18. The 33-year-old, who has 76 career sacks, worked out for the Oakland Raiders on Tuesday. He had 10 sacks in 14 games for the Patriots last year before his injury. Chris Long had 13 of the Rams’ 39 sacks last season.

Andre Carter still not close to being ready

Free agent defensive end Andre Carter has lined up workouts this week with the Raiders and Rams, leaving those in New England to wonder why things haven’t progressed with the Patriots.

Well, the word on Carter is he still lacks burst and explosion, and he’s not close to being ready to play.

This doesn’t mean he won’t sign somewhere else, or even with the Patriots, but the lack of movement toward a new contract might have more to do with his health than a request for a long-term deal. Carter had 10 sacks last season for the Patriots before tearing his quad in Week 15 against the Broncos.
