I'm not nearly as worried about the play calling...

Thoughts I came away with:

-Shaun Hill is more than capable of running this offense, and proved he can get the ball down the field.
-Some players look confused on their assignments - there was a screen on 3rd and 20 where both tavon austin and barksdale run right past a guy and let him make the play on givens.

-Tavon Austin out of the backfield is a bit risky but it did look to catch minny off guard...the problem wasn't the play call......it was:

-Devin Joseph..He is a big, big time liability. Hills fumble right before the pick? Josephs guy.. I don't think I need to go over how bad he was as no name guys like Tom Johnson beats him for a sack.. he struggled both in pass and run, including one of the failed runs to tavon.. This is a serious issue - why? Look who he lines up from across next week: Gerald Mccoy. Joseph had his ass handed to him consistently, and not just by shariff floyd either..now he gets a true stud next week..

Here's a play that ended up as a incomplete Deep To Quick - but Hill has pressure quickly..you can see how fast the pressure is by where the recievers are

The biggest issues for our offensive failures, imo, were shooting ourselves in the foot with penalties, play execution, and very poor line play..And for some reason, there looked like a considerable drop off from the first quarter to the 2nd quarter.

Glad to know it wasn't all that bad in the first half. I hope Joseph improves in the lineup or else Hill is gonna get killed there for realzy, I'm just gonna let this pass as rusty and hope a week of experience together will make the O-line cohesive.

Thanks for the breakdown @iced. I think we let G.Rob play and move Saffold back to right guard. We have to. It'll give us some fire in the run game, and give Greg a trial by fire in the pass game.

works for me - even if his head is "spinning".

A simpler scheme with a young but physical superior athlete is better than an old veteran that doesn't look like they can keep up physically anymore..

I agree.
Get Grob in there. Let him work it out on the field.

Just tell him the following: GRob, see the guy in front of you? Destroy him.

My guess is that GRob would only be too happy to take his best shot.

Thanks @iced I thought there were some plays that showed promise and really loved the first play of the game, you know Minni was selling out on the run that play.

Having Robinson in between Wells and Long should have been enough to settle him down. I thought the team wasted a lot of time playing him at T and giving him way too much to learn. That is probably why Joseph ended up getting the start game one. Simple blocking scheme and let them beat on the defense.

Great post iced.

Man if Barksdale opens his eyes and makes that block. Givens might have been gone.

Thanks for the post.

I would add that they still seem to have no idea how to use TA. I watch other teams with explosive players and they have ways of springing them consistently.

The first half could have went either way. The penalties muddied the waters. Gaines could have had an easy pick six. The play calling through the air was aggressive and successful.

The moment they left the field with time on the clock and 3 timeouts, my heart sunk. Perhaps Hill was hurt and that's why they did it, but it just sucked the energy out of the room when they quit to resounding boos. They were down 13 points and the air game was making big plays. It would have been so much cooler if they went for it. Of course, if Hill was hurt and Austin threw a pick six...

The second half was like they were playing in mud. Just no interesting play calls. I watched it AGAIN and I still come away with the impression the O was out coached.

Outside of the OC, I'm still very excited to see this season. Lots of talent and opportunity to play much much better. Hopefully I'm wrong about him.

I think the second half vanilla calling had more to do with having Davis at QB and his limitations.

Again - I think the Rams beat themselves, and outside the vikings d-line, they weren't much a factor.. I think a lot of viking fans are going to be in a shocker when they play a team that's more efficient on offense

Thanks Ice. I've said it before and I will again, execution is our biggest issue and that 3rd pic shows it. How may freaking times are we going to blow assignments which could of led to big plays.

This game makes me wonder if Schotty's offense is so complicated, even Schotty can't run it?

At some point; blaming execution fails to hold water for me. We've been saying this for 3yrs now. We've added and invested in offensive talent.

Scoring points is the name of the game. The Rams need to score points! That's his job.

I am not slamming Schotty. Just saying... Score points and the Schotty debate goes away. It's that simple.

Fair enough. But I have to wonder why it's so hard for players to just beat the guy in front of them too. I think Schotty is pragmatic, inventive, but maybe not very aggressive or adaptive. But I have no way of knowing that. How awesome would it be if we could all just sit in on a film session with the coaches and listen to them talk about game planning and breaking down previous games. I would kill to be able to do that.

You would think that after playing organized football for so many years, that some would know that "hey, that guy has a purple helmet on, maybe I should throw a shoulder block at him"

Honestly; this topic is like a black hole inside my brain. I can't figure it out, I have no idea what's on the other side, yet all logic seems to get sucked into it.

We have struggled on offense. We lacked talent. We rebuilt talent. We struggle on offense.

Yes, most teams would struggle with backup QB's... But... Is that it?

I honestly don't know! It's maddening! All I can do is point to the scoreboard.
